PROGRAM SCHEDULE

8:00 – 9:00 am – Trade Show Registration

8:00 -10:30 am – VCH Exam

9:00 -10:30 am – Keynote Address w/Darrel Morrison, FASLA – “Landscape Design as Ecological Art”

In the 21st Century, with increasing concern for “sustainable” landscapes, it is exciting to think of the possibilities of landscape design that is inspired and informed by naturally-evolving landscapes. Ideally, landscape design might advance to the level of “ecological art”.   Such art would lead to landscapes which are simultaneously:

  • Ecologically sound, with plants matched with the region and the microhabitats in which they are placed;  with minimal use of external resources, e.g., irrigation and supplemental nutrients.
  • They would not include invasive exotic species which may spread and reduce overall biodiversity.  They would be filled with life:  birds, bees and other pollinators.
  • Experientially rich, with a variety of line, form, color and texture, as well as movement and sound.
  • “Of the place”, reflecting the unique region and micro-habitats they occupy.  Gertrude Stein once said of Oakland, California, where she lived for a time, “There is no there there”.   Designed landscapes can incorporate a spirit of place.
  • Dynamic, i.e., changing over time.  Not only would there be seasonal changes, but also longer- term change, as plant distribution patterns evolve and a certain amount of natural succession occurs.  Essentially, landscape design can be a four-dimensional art, with time being the fourth dimension.

Darrel will talk about various influences on his own landscape design work:  Jens Jensen and Roberto Burle Marx, landscape architects;
Edith Roberts and Elsa Rehmann (authors of “American Plants for American Gardens”) Aldo Leopold, ecologist/philosopher and author of “A Sand County Almanac”) environmental psychologists Steve and Rachel Kaplan;  and the naturally-evolving landscape itself, where we can observe plant distribution patterns and ecological processes at work.

Case studies in the Northeast will be featured, e.g., “Native Woodland Garden” at New York University;  Storm King Art Center (sculpture park in Mountainville, NY);  Old Stone Mill landscape at New York Botanical Garden;  and expansion of the Native Flora Garden at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

10:30 – 11:00 am – Visit with Vendors/Trade Show

11:00 am-Noon  – “A Conversation with Darrel – Questions and (some) Answers”.

This session will provide the participants an opportunity to ask questions, and to expand on topics covered in the “Landscape Design as Ecological Art” lecture.  Darrel will also delve into the intricacies of the design process and talk about the establishment and management of specific types of landscapes, such as meadows and other alternatives to the “standard” landscape.
