Winter Workshop: Grafting Conifers-CANCELLED!!

Join our hosts Don and Lela Avery at Cady’s Falls Nursery. Don will demonstrate the methods he uses for grafting spruce, pine, fir and larch. He will explain the timing involved in grafting conifers, the selection and preparation of under-stock, the selection of scions and the mechanics of making the matching cuts, using the side veneer method. He will also show us the methods he has devised for nursing the grafts through the critical period when the graft unions are knitting together. After-care methods vary species-by-species and may entail the use of a small fog chamber, individual plastic tents, open-air healing in the greenhouse or an electric hot pipe in the root cellar.
The grafting demonstration will take place in a small greenhouse and standing room will be tight. We will go outside to take some scions from the mother plants and to take a look at the raised beds where the grafts are grown-on. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to make a few grafts to take home. If you have a conifer that you would like to propagate, you are welcome to bring a few scions of last year’s growth. Anyone who has a sharp grafting knife is encouraged to bring it to the workshop.
