Northern Vermont Perennial Garden Tours

Monday – August 8, 2016- REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.

Due to requests over the years, we’re pleased to announce a day tour of several Vermont perennial growers and display gardens in northern Vermont. We’ll travel in a Premier luxury coach (with room to hold plants and purchases). This tour is sponsored by Green Works, the Vermont Nursery and Landscape Association, in collaboration with and hosted by Dr. Leonard Perry, Horticulture Professor at the University of Vermont.

Visits will include Full Circle Gardens in Essex Junction, Perennial Pleasures Nursery in East Hardwick where we’ll have an English-style light lunch and cream tea, and von Trapp Greenhouses and Gardens in Waitsfield. Refreshments will be served going and coming, and the videos on the bus will give you an overview of other gardens and horticultural sites. There also will be plenty of gardening information and tips provided, a chance to ask your own garden questions, the chance to meet and network with other gardeners, and of course the opportunity to shop and buy perennials and plants for your own gardens.

Full Circle Gardens (www.fullcirclegardens.com), run by Sarah Salatino, is one of the largest dedicated perennial growing and retailing firms in the region. Here you can find hundreds of different perennials for rain gardens and pollinator gardens, native perennials, alpine plants, garden heirloom plants, groundcovers, woodland perennials and hardy hybrids. Plants are grown in local organic media with sustainable practices, and are of large landscape size ready for an instant display. Sarah will give us an overview of her operation, display gardens, and some tips for choosing perennials.

Perennial Pleasures

Perennial Pleasures Nursery (www.perennialpleasures.net), run by Rachel Kane, is a retail and mail-order nursery located in the beautiful North East Kingdom area of Vermont. The nursery, greenhouse and display gardens are sited on the sunny fields behind the family home– an 1840’s brick house at the edge of the village. They grow over 900 varieties of flowers, herbs and shrubs, specializing in heirloom and medicinal plants, and have one of the largest collections of garden phlox in the country. An eclectic gift shop, specializing in summer hats, is located in the old wooden extension. We’ll have time for lunch (included) in the display garden or conservatory, and guided tour of the gardens and some of the more special and unusual perennials.

The von Trapp Greenhouse and Gardens, (www.vontrappgreenhouse.com) was founded in 1980 by Tobi and Sally von Trapp. Located on the Waitsfield Common in Waitsfield, Vermont, the extensive perennial display gardens feature unequaled views of the Green Mountains. Unlike garden centers, which purchase the majority of their plant material as finished product from outside sources, the von Trapp Greenhouse grows all of its own plants from seeds, cuttings or divisions– over 550 cultivars of annuals including tender and tropical exotics, over 600 cultivars of perennials, and about 100 cultivars of herbs and vegetable plants.

Here’s your chance to visit several top quality Vermont perennial display gardens and growers, and to see hundreds of perennials (with a chance to shop).
